Ralph Alessi

It boils down to playing music, talking about music, listening to music.

Hip-Bone Music heads back to school bone2pick style featuring a dynamic sit down with one of the most creative forces on the international jazz scene, the great Ralph Alessi. Ralph generously shares his thoughts and insights on growing up in an extraordinarily musical household, becoming a stalwart in New York’s downtown music scene, recording and collaborating with the likes of Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Don Byron and Fred Hersch, developing his thriving solo career and founding the School for Improvisational Music. Enjoy!

Loved the interview, Michael! Of course I have known Ralph since he was about 5 years old. Today, he is the only jazz trumpeter I have ever seen who automatically uses his 1st and 3rd valve slides while playing – even fast – which makes his intonation consistently accurate. I am sure that is his father’s influence from those 10 years of lessons. His sound (tone) – using the Bach 37 trumpet and Bach 1 1/2 mouthpiece – is warm and clear like one hears from a classical player.
